Summer is a time for sun and fun, so we tend to eat light and play hard.
This is a great time of year to eat raw foods (which can be too energetically cold and difficult to digest for some in the winter months).
Summer is for salads and fruits and just about anything eaten outside with friends, family and furry pals!
And don't forget to stay hydrated!
Adding fresh fruits and veggies to water can help to flavor it and help you absorb it better by adding some electrolytes - think lime with mint or using frozen watermelon balls as ice cubes!
In case you missed it, my favorite summer fizzy drink is water kefir - delicious AND fun to make!
So, what food are in season for summer? A ton:
Some great summer meals could be:
- A big summer salad with pickled beets, figs and some local goat cheese
- Bunless burgers with grilled squash, corn and peppers
- Tilapia with a delicious, homemade tomatillo salsa and zucchini noodles
- A giant fruit salad with honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, cherries, blackberries and blueberries
Remember, it's best to follow the dirty dozen/clean fifteen when choosing your fresh produce (and buy local whenever possible)!
Also remember than corn, beets and zucchini are some of the most genetically modified crops in the US (which contribute to leaky gut and autoimmune-like conditions), so I always recommend buying non-GMO or organic of those as well.
